War and Peace

"Bleed Red" is the first single by singer Ronnie Dunn released in 2009. This song is about his desire for peace and forgiveness. He also states that, win or lose, no one gains anything from violence and that everyone is in fact a victim of war. In this video, he lists many big historical events to remind us of the ruthlessness of war and people's protest against violence.

What is your opinion about war and forgiveness? When it comes to war, should we forgive and forget? What do you find most thought-provoking about this song?

  1. I find the chorus most thought-provoking. I think its basically saying that we are all part of the human race and hurt each other but we should put aside our differences and forgive each other. I found it so interesting because most people only identify themselves as a nationality and see themselves as extremely different than people from other countries but when you really think about it we are all human and all extremely similar physically, mentally, and emotionally. If the world stopped looking so much at the differences between populations and started looking at how similar we all are there would be a lot less war and fighting.

  2. I think it seems like a good idea, see the similarities in all of us and stick with peace. However, it seems a bit simplistic, when there is so much inequality among how people live all over the world. It's hard to tell someone in poor village that they should just be happy that we are all the same. Greed has governed the world in all conflicts. If you can remove greed, which is in human nature, then you can remove conflict. Just saying sorry won't work, like the song suggests. The interesting thing about wanting peace, is it is a direct result of war that peace is even possible. So there is a dialectic relationship between the two.

  3. Peace and love. The song is definitely showing that through the images of the video. The anti-war messages are shot straight to home with the girls with the red war paint looking sad while draped in the American flag. The multiple images of leaders that promoted peace confrims this as well. I cannot say that I am totally anti-war, but I am for the idea of peace. War is necessary for some causes, but it is best to prevent it when possible. I believe that as a war victim you should forgive but don't forget. Its hard to say whether you can forget something as tragic as a war trauma, but you can definitely forgive.

    1. I agree with the forgive, but dont forget. I do no think it is always possible to forgive though, some people could always be bitter no matter how hard they try. Nevertheless great point with the 'forgive, but dont forget'

  4. I feel like the artist uses a depressed way to illustrate his idea of this Music video. There are tears, wars, the dead, black smoke around the house and so on. The main color used in this video are black and red which would most probably cause depress to audiences. I guess he just uses this scene to convey the information that wars are blooding and horrible so that we should not forget and we should try our best to keep peace environment worldwide. Also, the red on the faces of kids reminds me of blood and no matter what, the kids are the most innocent but who get hurt most in the war. Violence is not the best way to solve problems and peace is always what we should pesue and always the best and most effective way.

  5. I have to say that while war is a terrible thing, I do however support it under the right circumstances. It seems that this song is portraying the idea that we all are equal, in the sense that we "all bleed red" and that we should not be fighting each other..however, I found some parts of the song/video to be somewhat contradictory to what the artist is trying to get across..he sings about peace and how there should be no fighting, yet shows clips of Iraqis holding up peace signs with an attack helicopter in the background. In my personal opinion, those Iraqis are holding up that peace sign because of the overthrowing of Saddam Hussein, also shown in the video with the infamous scene of his statue being torn down. I feel as if that is not a good example of promoting anti-war, if that's what this artist is truly trying to convey, because without the use of military force and violence against Saddam's old reigme, those Iraqis wouldn't be holding up those peace signs. So in a way, that to me kind of shows right there the necessary times where war and voilence are needed in order to provide people with peace as the end result.

  6. I think in this song Ronnie Dunn isn't necessarily saying that there should be no war. I think he's saying that sometimes war is needed but in the end there should be no grudges because everyone "bleeds red" and "cry tears" He is saying that we are all part of the human race and with that comes war and peace.

  7. I know that war is awful. But I also agree with Jeff's comment above me that we support it under the right circumstances. When it comes to a war, we probably have no opportunity to think about forgiving.
Everyone has hurt themselves and bleed whether it be physical or emotional. Also says that everyone makes mistake even we didn't intended. So we all need to be considerate to others. This song again reminded me that I should always feel thankful for what I have and be considerated of others.

  8. I want to first say that I have never heard this song, but I loved it, it gave me goosebumps. I think that the artist is trying to say that we are all human and mistakes, and because everyone makes mistakes, forgiveness should always be given a chance. I think he also saying that forgiveness does not always work when he talks about "cutting deep", but should nevertheless be given a chance. I think it is also saying that war is a necessary evil, because it shows things such as 9/11, of course America must answer the call in that situation. I find the lyrics,"we all bleed red" the most thought provoking. This is because no matter our different race, language, culture, beliefs, etc. we all have something in common with one another.

  9. I agree with Taylor were all human and make mistakes (We all bleed red). In my opinion I dont think that war is necessary right but it is needed because a bully wont back down until someone stands up to them. So if there is a rightful cause to defend oneself or group of people then war is just. I also think that people should forgive and forget yet I still agree with defending oneselve. In our world today sadly enough forgive and forget doesnt get you vary far. If enslaved people were to truly forgive and forget then history itself would truly be different. This meaning that they would possibly be able to forgive but never forget. We all bleed red and I dont think thats its possible to totally do both.

  10. I think the war is just one kind of the method, which is the most destructive one, when we have a problem. It is neither necessarily needed nor can be justified. The musician might be saying that we are all human, have santity of life and need to be respected it by all efforts. In my opinion, true forgiveness means "no debt any more".

  11. Although the content of this song is some kind of repetition that we have heard a hundred times, it is the beautiful chorus that makes this song unique and moving. Basically it tells what other guys have said. But I have to say forgiveness is never easy to obtain in this scenario. Born in peace time (relatively of course), I used to take it for granted that every ordinary civilian wanted peace. Why not? However, after once I met with some families that have suffered great losses from the war (relatives killed by Japanese army), I found it was only easy for us who never really experienced war to say those things. And I even felt a little guilty when I suggested forgiveness to them. Certainly I do not mean forgiveness is useless. It is just... really not that easy to put all those blood debts down. It takes great length of time to heal.

  12. It would be asking a lot of citizens living in a war-torn country to completely forgive their attackers. So much of their life is affected by the what is going on. These feelings of anger toward the "enemy" are deep seated and have almost become a part of who that person is. I am with Taylor though as I got goosebumps towards the end when the bombs went off in the field in Vietnam. He does say though that we are all similar and have inherent flaws. This is a key to helping forgive.

  13. I think that the video is trying to say that even though it is hard sometime, everyone should try to forgive the people that wronged them. Everyone makes mistakes because "We all bleed red." At the core, noone is perfect, so we should try to forgive people for the wrongs that they have caused us.

  14. I like how this song basically says that we are all the same, we all feel and do the same things, why oppose each other. We are all part of the human race, why hurt someone when you wouldn't want to be hurt? It also brings up about how we all also make mistakes. Sometimes the only thing you can do is forgive and forget.
